Aerion plans to have the AS2, a business jet that will be able to fly Mach 1.5, faster than the speed of sound, ready for flight by 2021, and approved for sale just two years later.
WINDOWS are larger than the Boeing 787’s (the best in commercial aviation), and measure 13 inches wide by 18 inches tall. Considerable attention has been given to window and seating placement for optimum viewing angles from every seat.
Eight large windows were selected as the most attractive and functional arrangement. This configuration allows for three windows between each of the two cabin seating areas, with every individual passenger having a window at a good viewing angle.
SOUND REDUCTION will be a significant engineering objective. Aerion’s objective is a passenger area dB level equivalent to best-in-class sound levels in the ultra-long-range segment.

The AS2 evolved from extensive market research with potential customers for a larger, longer-range supersonic jet.
For the $120 million price, a buyer can go 4,750 nautical miles at up to 1.5 times the speed of sound.
The biggest hurdle remains a ban on commercial jets flying at supersonic speeds over the continental U.S.
Other countries also require ultra fast planes to spend as much time as possible over the ocean to avoid the distinctive boom when they exceed the speed of sound.
The AS2 would have to take to skirt the U.S. and Canadian coasts and link London and New York while shaving 2½ hours over a conventional business jet flying a more direct route at close to the speed of sound.
Aerion has followed a similar, deviated path. The closely held company was created in 2002 by private-equity billionaire Robert Bass, an aerospace enthusiast who plowed funds from his Oak Hill investment firm into the venture.
The market for supersonic business jets is likely between 300 and 350 aircraft over between 15 and 20 years.
The Gallery is more than five feet long with surface and storage space typical of long-range jets.
A pocket door between galley and the passenger seating area reduces sound levels and provides privacy.
A flight attendant can work in this area and rest in a fixed-width jump seat.
These jets will be able to fly faster than the speed of sound.
It takes a normal jet about seven hours to make that trip, but the Aerion AS2 will reduce the time significantly.
It will have a supersonic range of 4,750 nautical miles, meaning it could fly from San Francisco to London at the speed of sound.
On the Aerion AS2, a supersonic private jet currently in development, it would be just ten hours.
The first AS2 jet is expected in 2021.
According to original plans, these jets were intended to be powered by Pratt & Whitney's JT8D engines.
Rolls-Royce's history with Concrode, a supersonic passenger jet airliner that was operated until 2003, along with its experience in producing engines for the Tornado and Typhoon fighters has made the British engineering firm a front runner for the Aerion contract.
However, Aerion now plans to bring supersonic jets back and is currently manufacturing a private jet with a top speed of Mach 1.6 — around 1,200mph — which will allow flying for 5,000 miles.
Aerion’s custom-designed seats are the same width as those in the Global 5000, and will have the same recline, swivel, track and berthing capabilities.
