The Falcon 900 ultra long range jet was Dassault’s first foray into the heavy-iron private jet market. This is not to say that Dassault is an inexperienced company, by any means – their Jets are known for having high standards of engineering, structural quality, and technological advancement – but the "Falcon 900" was a step beyond where they had gone before.

The cabin seating for 12 to 14, a range of 4,630 nautical miles (four passengers, NBAA IFR reserves).

The ability to use much shorter runways and have much greater peace of mind when traversing large bodies of water than you can with comparable twin-jets.

The standup, flat-floor cabin yields 1,264 cubic feet of space and is 77 inches wide. The optional forward crew lavatory cuts down on galley space but is a must-have for longer missions.

The galley is adequate: it offers hot and cold running water, a convection/microwave oven, ice drawer and stowage.

Eliminating a forward closet can clear the way for an optional third crew seat.

Typical cabin layouts include a forward club-four grouping followed by four smaller seats arrayed around a hi-lo conference table opposite a credenza.

Behind that there is room for more single seats or a pair of three-place divans.

This aft part of the cabin can be closed off with a solid pocket door, creating a private suite.

Behind this space you will find the generous aft lavatory with in-flight, walk-through access to the baggage compartment.

The EX arrived from the factory with several improvements, chief among them the new Honeywell TFE731-60 engines with autothrottles and Primus 2000 avionics.

The engines weighed a few hundred pounds more than their predecessors but provided 500 pounds of additional thrust each (to 5,000 pounds each).

The EX also featured more fuel stored in two belly tanks, one near the forward wing box and the other in the aft, which collectively add nearly an hour of endurance.

However, that forward belly tank was the subject of a European airworthiness directive that required a modification.

This is often referred to as the “dry bay mod,” to structurally strengthen the area to protect it in the event of a main-landing-gear collapse.

Dassault has issued a corresponding service bulletin. Doing the mod at the same time as the six-year “C Check” major inspection can be a real time and money saver.

The Dassault Falcon 900 is an impressive private jet. A flight range of over 5,000 miles, a comfortable cabin, and an innovative three-engine configuration.

Usual seating configurations are for between eight and twelve passengers. Two seats can be reclined and combined to make a full-length bed.

Otherwise all of the seats are fully adjustable, can move along a track, swivel and recline.

It can cruise at altitudes as high as 51,000 feet and is rated to 9.3 psi, meaning it can maintain a sea level cabin at 25,300 feet.

The DX, which has a range of 4,100 nautical miles, incorporated the same engines, cockpit, and cabin equipment as the 900EX EASy, but had a redesigned fuel system.

The 900’s unique combination of cabin comfort, mission versatility and favorable operating economics.

More than 25 years after it first entered service, the Falcon 900 remains in a class by itself.

From its three-engine layout to its advanced computer design to its construction using lightweight alloys and composites, the 900 series is truly peerless.

Dassault has made many improvements to the aircraft in terms of range, avionics and engine power, but the guts of the airplane and its value proposition remain largely unchanged.

The tri-jet design lets you go where twinjets cannot and the lightweight construction means you burn less fuel while doing so.

A new copy of the latest iteration, the 900LX, will set you back nearly $42 million. However, its predecessor, the 900EX, offers much of the same utility.

Dassault produced it from 1996 to 2010, and used prices start around $14 million.

Falcon 900 prices start at $5 million for a 1987 model. Falcon 900Bs can be acquired for between $6 million and $12.5 million. Falcon 900Cs cost between $12.5 million and $16.5 million.

EX prices range from $15 million to $35 million. DX models run from $21.5 million to $32 million, and LX airplanes cost between $36 million and $42.4 million.

Dassault also has touted the aircraft’s three-engine design as offering increased safety margins for overwater flying.

In 1991 the manufacturer developed the Falcon 900B, which was outfitted with 4,750-pound-thrust TFE731-5BR-1C engines and offered an increase in range to 4,000 nautical miles.

Almost all earlier Falcon 900s were upgraded with -5BR engines. In 1995, Dassault introduced the Falcon 900EX equipped with 5,000-pound-thrust TFE731-60 turbofans.

The EX offered increased fuel capacity and efficiency, higher operating weights, Honeywell Primus 2000 avionics, and an increase in range to 4,500 nautical miles.

The 900EX was certified in mid-1996. Despite the introduction of the 900EX, the less-expensive, shorter-range Falcon 900B remained in production until it was superseded by the 900C, which had a higher gross weight and Primus 2000 avionics. The 900C was certificated in 1999.
